Halicek’s toast of the club

8/10/2008 9:32:00 AM
OLIVIA Halicek is the toast of Forster Aquatic Swimming Club after a stunning medal winning performance at the Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne.

Olivia who trains under Peter Sanders at Great Lakes Aquatic Centre, competed in six events at the National Titles, where she qualified for four finals.

Competing against Australian representatives Cate Campbell, Sophie Eddington and Jade Edmistone, Halicek won three medals.

The local teen took away a bronze in the 100m freestyle, silver in the 100m individual medley and silver in the 50m freestyle.

In the 100m IM final, Halicek produced a 0.5 second PB and narrowly missed the gold medal and national title by a mere 0.14 of a second.

In one of the last events of the meet, Halicek took the blocks for the hotly contested 50m freestyle final and produced another sizzling PB to finish second only behind superstar Cate Campbell, who is a current Olympian and winner of two bronze medals at the recent Beijing Olympics.

Halicek’s freestyle finals time was the fourth fastest ever swum by an Australian in a short course race.

“I am just so happy… Just thank you so much to all the people who have helped me.

“You know, my coach Peter Sanders, everyone at the swim club, the people at the YMCA and Aaron Woolley who has been helping with some fitness work,” Halicek said.

Meanwhile 17-year-old Forster Aquatic member Adam Frost qualified for the Australian Short Course Championships just months after competing at the Olympic Trials.

Competing in his pet discipline Frost qualified for the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke.

In spectacular fashion Frost ripped a huge 1.2 seconds off his own personal best time in the 100m breaststroke to stop the clock at 1:06.24.

Considering the world class opposition, swimming against the likes of Christian Sprenger, this was a wonderful result for Frost.

However it doesn’t stop there, the teen’s star continues to rise having qualified and competed in both the Australian Long Course and Short Course titles in the same year.

As a long time member of Forster Aquatic Swimming Club, Frost’s results are just reward for the years of early morning training sessions and the additional mental toughness to get to this elite level of swimming.

Both Halicek and Frost, compete weekly in the club’s Friday night competition at the Great Lakes Aquatic Centre, with the new season commencing on Friday October 17.

All current members and people interested in joining the club are encouraged to come along for a wonderful family evening where swimmers compete in different grades and can rub shoulders with our three current national representatives Halicek, Frost and Shannon Clarke.

Registrations for the upcoming season will be held on Monday October 13 and Wednesday October 15 from 4.30pm to 6pm at the Great Lakes Aquatic Centre.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
