Cotterell to face masters

24/09/2008 10:24:00 AM
FORSTER Taekwondo student Lee Cotterell will now face the Pan Pacific Masters on the Gold Coast in December after competing at the Hunter Valley Championships earlier this month.

The senior red belt took out silver in the patterns and bronze in the team breaking events before going on to win gold with a sudden death point in sparring.

It was her first time competing in a sparring competition.

New rules state a draw in points will see a winner determined by a golden point or sudden death round.

“(Lee) came through in the final and won in golden point,” Australian Taekwondo director Fay Shacklock said.

Shacklock and Cotterell will now travel to the Gold Cost where over 10,000 international competitors will compete in a range of sports. Shacklock will be contesting her own national championship title.

Eight students from the Forster club took part in the Hunter Valley Championships.

“Our guys did really well, there was not one that didn’t get a medal,” Shacklock said.

Shacklock said she was proud of her students who brought home 20 medals.

“Up here there is a small membership and basing it on the per cent it is the best effort I have ever had,” Shacklock said.

Shacklock has trained students as a headmaster in Campbelltown, Glebe and Balmain.

With Cotterell going on to contest the Pan Pacific Masters event, junior yellow belt student Johhney Bell and intermediate yellow belt student Jayden Relf will also move into a state competition.

Coached by Grant Maloney, Bell proved to be a tough competitor at Broadmeadow.

With a change to rules that now state the fighting stops after one opponent has gained a seven point lead, Bell took out his competition with a seven point lead each time.

“(His sparring competition) didn’t go the full distance,” Shacklock said.

Bell also took second place in the breaking event.

“They were all competitive right till the end.” said.

Club captian Grant Maloney and team manager Lee Cotterell supported the team throughout the day.

The club came away with five gold, ten silver and five bronze medals.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
