A FAST pace was set as car enthusiasts took on the Old Pacific Highway during the Bulahdelah Hillclimb on Sunday.

Forty six drivers tested their skills over 1148m of challenging road.

Mudgee’s Douglas Barry took out the overall winner’s position with a best time of 33.3 seconds.

“There are a whole array of different classes; drivers are competing for the quickest time overall and the quickest time in their class,” chief scrutineer Paul Dimmock said.

A large number of first time drivers contested the course.

“Everybody have a good day and drive within your limits,” clerk of course Ross Jones told drivers during the briefing.

The event was over early for Steven Hooker who crashed his Jedi and broke the back and front suspension.

While Hooker was unhurt his Jedi had to be towed off the track.

Brett Thomas put on a show for the crowd in his Falcon.

Speaking before the event Thomas said he was there to keep the crowd happy.

“He smoked and screamed around the track and later in the day blew his gear box,” Jones said.

Sunday’s event was the fourth time Newcastle driver Errol Mayo had competed on the track.

“It is a very good open flowing track; it’s very fast,” Mayo said.

Mayo said the three lanes of road give the drivers a wide area to work with.

“It ranks up with the best in the state,” Mayo said.

Female driver Michelle Gyer has committed to the next hill climb.

“She turned it on and scorched up the hill, she will be back next year,” Jones said.

The Myall Lakes Motor Sport Club has been working on getting the hillclimb back to Bulahdelah for the past 12 months.

The club has received a five year approval from council to hold the hillclimb twice a year.

Members of the state hill limb panel attended on Sunday to view the event.

The club has received a positive response so far and are hoping to hold one round of the NSW Hillclimb Championship in the area during September 2009.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
